How to Buy a Content Website

A content site is not just a traffic chart. Its value depends on why people arrive, whether rankings and audience trust are durable, and how revenue converts from that attention.

Separate durable demand from temporary rankings

Break down traffic by page, query type, geography and acquisition channel. Heavy dependence on a handful of pages or volatile query classes increases risk.

Review content ownership and quality

Confirm original ownership, contractor agreements, image licenses and publishing processes. Look for thin, duplicated or templated content that may not deserve its current visibility.

Inspect backlinks and brand signals

Review link concentration, relevance and suspicious patterns. Compare branded search, direct traffic, returning visitors and email audience to understand whether demand exists beyond search-engine rankings.

Validate revenue model

Reconcile display-ad, affiliate, sponsorship or product revenue to source systems. Identify concentration in a single merchant, network or program and whether the economics transfer to a new owner.

Map maintenance workload

Understand publishing cadence, update requirements, technical SEO, content operations and editorial expertise. A site that needs constant refreshes is economically different from a stable evergreen library.

Price for downside as well as upside

Model a traffic decline scenario and ask whether the asset still makes sense. Search-heavy acquisitions should not be valued as if current rankings are guaranteed.
